ATHENS, Ga. — President Jere Morehead addressed participants Saturday during UGA Miracle’s annual Dance Marathon at Stegeman Coliseum, recognizing the event’s growth and student involvement over time.

“This is the 31st event of this,” Morehead said. “I was at the first one, and what I’ve seen over the years is incredible growth, not only in numbers, in the amount of funds that you’ve raised for this cause, but also in the impact that you’ve had on children’s health care.”

Participants sat in groups divided by “color teams,” each competing to raise the most funds by the end of the event. Students wore matching shirts representing their teams and gathered on the arena floor during the remarks, some holding signs and others listening from the stands. Morehead thanked students for their continued commitment, noting that many return to participate in Dance Marathon each year.

“I know for some of you, you have worked weeks, months on this project,” he said. “The devotion and the commitment that you have to this important cause is inspirational for all of us at the University of Georgia.”

The event is organized by UGA Miracle and serves as the culmination of a yearlong fundraising effort benefiting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Morehead concluded his remarks by thanking participants on behalf of the university.
